A tragic fire in Pottsville, PA on Mother’s Day claimed the lives of six people — including four children under the age of 9.  No smoke detectors were found in the home, despite a visit from a Pottsville code administrator back in December, who recommended them.

In Baltimore City, you can receive free smoke detectors, so there’s no excuse for not having them.  Call 311 or use the online 311 customer service request form, and the fire department will bring them to you and install them.  If you’re using the online form, next to “Service Type”, choose “Smoke Alarm Installation Request” from the drop-down menu.

We’ve had more than our fair share of fatal fires this year in Baltimore City — an increase over 2012’s number, and it’s only May.

Aren’t your home and your family worth a simple phone call or five minutes online?
